Hey guy, not sure if this is a widespread thing, i have just recently starte a new aquarium which has been running for 6 weeks now. I introduced a pair of dwarf gouramis, one male and one female, the fish were both in the tank for 2 weeks, had a healthy background and had no sign of disease. Yesterday the male Gourami died, for an unknown reason, the only thing that i did notice is that there was a small red lump above its mouth. The female has been fine for the last few days and i introduced another male, however now the same mark on the mouth has appeared on the female that i hadnt previously noticed. Is this a normal mark on the fish or could it possibly be some sort of disease that only effects the gouramis as all the other fish are fine! Anybody with any experience of this and what it could be would be greatly appreciated!

D G are very prone to this type of bacterial growth and eventual death. I had serveral attempts at keeping them, all ended like yours. I don't bother with them any more!

They do need a matured and planted tank of at least 6 months to stand a chance

I have heard sooo many stories about this DG thing and it really worries me because my DG is my fave fish (as you can tell by my avatar), he has loads of personality and I would be gutted if anything happened to him.

Just want to mention my experience of DGs as Doresy has mentioned his clearly bad experience with them I just want to tell you the other side of the coin.

When I 1st started my tank I didn't know about cycling etc. I'd kept fish before 9 years ago when fishless cycling didn't really exist so i popped my DG in an uncycled tank. Although I quickly found this site and kept my ammonia and nitrites right down I did go on holiday for 5 days and the ammonia and nitrites shot up killing my 2 frogs.... but my DG lived happily and is still alive doing really well.

He is more agressive than all my cichlids put together but at least (touch wood) healthy.. Also he did have 2 girlfriends but he quickly killed them off when he decided he wanted to be a free man :/

Anyway my point is dont give up on them, they're lovely fish... perhaps yes put them in a mature tank and get them from a reputable stockist.

Good Luck though!!

The same thing happened to me as well. Don't blame yourself. It's common for DG to get this. I would quarantine the fish with the addition of salt in addition to the other medications. The one medication I can suggest would be primafix/melafix combined and salt.. I did that with my gourami

But lets hear some more suggestions on what medication to use.
