My apartment complex is wanting a FIVE HUNDRED DOLLAR DEPOSIT for each fish tank with air bubbles and a filter!!!

Has anyone heard of something like this before? I think it's completely outrageous. Because of this and a number of other factors, I'm breaking my lease here.

Jeez. :S

for air bubbles and a filter?

so yu can have a tank, just without bubbles and filtration without a deposit???

get out of there

Good. Leave.

I have not had a problem with my tanks, and I have lived in two separate apartment complexes.

It's probably their way of saying anything larger than the standard "goldfish bowl" or "betta bowl". I can see their point though. If there's a leak it could cause damage to your apt. and the one below also. It may make you feel bad right now but you will get it back when you leave if there is no evidence that there was a tank there (ie. stained carpeting or ceiling below)
They are just trying to have money to repair things after a disaster if someone runs out on them. Another example of one or two bad tennants screwing up things for everyone after them.
If it is a NON-REFUNDABLE deposit I would tell them to shove it but I could understand them wanting enough money to make repairs if there was an incedent. Most places charge a dog or cat deposit and lots of them are non refundable.
Maybe this landlord has had an issue like this before and they just want to make it clear.... or maybe they are just jerks.
I'm not on anyone's side but I could see both parties' issues.

Man, I'd like to live it those apartments, canarsie.

I called up another apartment complex here and asked if they had a fish deposit and the lady laughed at me. A simple no woulda done fine but whatever. lol.

I am soooo fed up with this apartment. By their logic, I could set up a pond on my balcony as long as it didn' have a filter.

That would total up to $2000 for my 20gal, 2 10gals, and a 5 gal.

Luckily that apartment I found will take my kitties too for cheap. Yay. :D

I spoke to our letting agent before getting my tank... and they said any tank is fine as long as it's not attatched to the wall, i.e. on a shelf or some such device.

500 bucks sounds a bit excessive!
