hi all,

whilst my tank is cycling i am looking at fish i would like to stock and have compiled a chart of the fish, including ph, temp, dh etc, whilst looking around the various sites they vary site to site and i wondered what peoples thoughts are on them.

my tank is 39x12x17" (140 litres)

my inital thoughts were cardinals 8-10 off, rummynose 8-10 off and cherry barbs 6-8 off, however ive seen torpedo barbs and i'm loving these fish.

my PH is constantly showing 7.6 also

any feedback gladly welcomed

thanks.

AH stupid works machine haha, it hasn't uploaded the picture, i'll add it tonight, sorry :(

Your tank is rather small for Redline Torpedo Barbs, I have five in my 5x2x2 after losing one in early June, once I'm happy in my own mind that this was a one-off mystery death I will be moving the group into a heaterless Rio240 (48x15x21 I think) to go with my Ilyodon xantusi (until such times as I rehome the barbs to someone with an existing group).

Torpedos differ from your other listed fish in that they are temperate, coming from Indian waters that are know to at least officially swing between 15C and 25C through the seasons, whereas those other fish would work well together in a tropical setup maintaining at least 24C.

My personal viewpoint is that I would like to have a centrepiece fish as well as the shoals. In your position, I'd probably get an apistogramma of some sort, probably cockatoo or agassizi, and maybe knock 1 off each shoal.

Having said that, you may prefer groups of shoaling fish (which do look great when they do it properly), and as far as shoals are concerned, the more in the shoal, the merrier, so you might well want to completely ignore me (I won't be insulted).

And, like Goat says, no to the torpedos, they're too big for you.

hey guys appreciate info, and advice taken, i asked for it so please advise! gutted about torpedo barbs HOWEVER advice taken and interest of the fish these won't be considered. i do LOVE shoaling fish and it is the affect i'm wanting, so with that in mind i feel rummys, cardinals and cherrys it'll be...how about 6 cherrys then 12/14 of each other, i was told roughly 32-34 fish in my size tank? again lookin for better advice and it will be adhered too, thanks again

In my experience cardinals (and from what I hear rummys are similar) don't really school they just kind of hover around in a disjointed way which is part of the reason I got rid of them and got more espei rasboras. Another point to consider if you like the look of schooling fish is that one big school looks way better than 2 or 3 schools. Then the whole tank is moving as one for a much more dramatic effect. I tell everyone to get espeis because I love them so much, but do look in to them as they are fantastic schoolers. :good:

yeh i remember those as a kid, am sure me parents had them, rummys are a deffo for me, ive seen them soo many times and just love them! my missus likes cherry barbs and i was finkin cards or neons, hmmm not sure on them now, maybe espies???

If you're having rummy noses and cherry barbs, that's quite a lot of red. How about green/false neons? no red on them at all,so would give you more of a contrast than the R. espei.

Of course, you might want the tank all red! Would look nice against the plants; I just don't like too much red in my tanks :)

hey am open to suggestions mate, rummys are a deffo the cherrys cud be replaced?! emarld dwarf rasboras r a pretty fish but may stuggle finding them where i live, cardinals seem to be all ova, those rummy are awsum, but i will av a look for those u suggested ;)

I think you'd struggle to see dwarf emerald rasboras at their best in a tank that big! You'd need a heck of a big shoal to make any impact, and they're a fish you need to press your nose right up against the glass to really appreciate, IME.

Of course, if the tank's right nxst to your favourite armchair, that might be a good way to go.

no its not, so slowly eliminating these fish, would this be the same for galaxy rasboras also?

Yes, it would IMO, although I've not kept them myself.

Ah! Cool! There's a few of us Carlilians on here so keep a keen eye out ;)

I'm glad they have worked out for you, you're welcome!
