Hi,
This morning my mom told me she found one of our male swordtails on the ground dead... And one of my upside down corys is missing too! Hes not in the tank and I havent found him on the ground either. Im asssuming he jumped and either my cat or dog ate him...
Is this common? I have heard (and seen) bettas jumping but I have never know these types of fish to jump...

I'm pretty sure all fish are capable of jumping with the right motivation. That's why people should have some type of hood on the tank. My betta hasn't jumped out but I wouldn't risk leaving him without a hood.

I found my dog munching on an albino cory that jumped a while back. Jumping fish + 4 legged pets = quick snack.

Tolak

I have to watch that with my red-tailed black shark, in aquarium fish magazine, there was a warning that said to close all possible exits for the shark to jumo out, because red-tailed sharks like to jump out of tanks, but mine never tried this.

Ok never mind about the upside down cory... I found him hiding but the swordtail did jump. I have the body to prove it...
All my betta tanks have lids on them too :)

Sometimes fish don't even mean to jump out, I fed my peacock eel an earth worm and he started flipping out, I left, but quickly went back to check on him (He was new, I wanted to make sure he was ok), and he was flopping around on the floor  I saved him, the lucky fish :p

My daughter was playing with one of my betta females tanks, lifted the lid and out she jumped! To my daughters mortification. We found the betta girl in the end (after a great search - she'd flipped her way under a computer desk and up against a wall) and she's still living, but my daughter hasn't done such a thing ever again!

I had a few fish find the small openings in the light fixture in the past. I know eels have a habit of "jumping" out of the tanks. I have found Platys, Jack Dempseys, Angles and a few others on the floor before, it can happen. :/

No jumping fish yet but I've had to deal with about 15 suicidal shrimp. I counted 7 jumpers, and one I haven't yet found...

I've had a an African Butterfly Fish somehow get out of a tank that is enclosed in glass sheets on top with a fully enclosed lid on top... -_-

Also had a large shrimp walk from a sump tank and wander about 20 feet into the kitchen where we found him when we came home, he was still alive but didn't make it... :/

My largest bala shark often trys to kjump out until he brains himself on something and calms down for a while. The last time he ended up motionless for half an hour before resuming swimming (somewhat calmer since then ;) )

Basically fish jump, I guess, no matter how big a tank we give them, they are used to larger surrounding and are wondering if a bigger river is just over there...

the worst ive had is hatchet fish minute id open the tank for long enough such as on water changes theyd try to get away i lost 5 of them in the end coz i cud never see them on the floor

I have only had a few times when fish have jumped. My Oscar was excited once because I was feeding him, and as soon as I opened the lid, he flew! He landed on the floor and I quickly scooped him up.

Another time one of my Pineapple Swords jumped out and I couldn't find him. But I did eventually... but he wasn't alive :-( .

I lost a Betta once as well, but I was on vacation.

And for some reason one of my Sunset Platties has gone missing as well! :sly:

I had a suicidal black molly that would jump out of a little hole in the lid when someone stomped by (or even walked by) the tank. A few hours later we would find it an place it back in the tank. One night, however, it jumped and when we found it in the morning it was too late...he was dried to the floor :-(

I have also had bala sharks and swordtails especially jump on me many times.
