Nylon stocking? yes..! The heat would be able to get throughh sufficiantly, would it? That sounds promising!

I think going with the mosquito netting or nylon stocking might be a better idea, there is no way fry are getting through mosquito netting or nylon.

if the filter is placed next to the heater... would the heat still get through the tank properly?

I know with just the clips the heat gets dispersed (now I have mine near the filter), but I don't see why it wouldn't with the netting or the nylon, I mean the netting/nylon won't prevent the water from going through. I have a nylon stocking over the intake of my filer for the betta tank (to protect his fins) and I still get the same amount of water flowing though the filter, so I don't think it would prevent the warm water from being dispersed.
