I decided to do a big water change yesterday just to get a bit of fresh water in there for the fishies. That all went well counted and checked over all my fish except the synodontis which is always hiding.
But this morning I woke up not by my alarm clock that didnt go off but by a noise coming from the power head that automatically comes on with a timer, it made a sound like it was labouring a bit then went back to normal so thought nothing of it. Anyway came back from work and could only count five clown loaches, so i took a look round the tank and saw the sixth one tail in the power head poor little one looks like he tried to swim up the power head got stuck and it looked like it broke its neck.

I like them so Im sad to see him die this way. so will be getting another one when I can soon and also have now put a smaller fitting on the power head so it cant happen again.

It just seems that every time I do a big water change the fish go suicidal cause the last time I did a big water change four of my Neons got into my filter. So not only these machines keep them alive they can kill as well

A lot of my fish will become rather active when I do a water change it's a common thing. I never see the reason of having a powerhead on a timer. The first time I got my angel it almost got sucked into it but it learned to avoid it and after a day it never went near it. But if you have it on a timer and it suddenly goes off, you're fish will become curious once again and yea the worse thing will happen.

But fish are very curious things, I find that having the powerhead on all the time makes them stay well clear of it.

Sorry for your lost

I've always been curious about this, my archers show a mix of fear and hyperactivity during water changes: is there a definitive explanation for this?
