For thoses who has ascess to bbc iplayer there is an amazing documentary about Japan its people and how linked they are to fish.

it certainly made me see things in a new light and the Japanese are not as barbaric as I first thought when it comes down to fish

Did you not see the first bit where they were at that restraunt - the fish had been filleted alive and was still moving on the plate while they were eating it. This might not be representative of the whole culture, but I would still call it barbaric.

I did watch this when it was on tv. I do agree it was barbaric and cruel to the fish but that's there culture . We brits do have a tendency not to associate whats on our plate to an animal .I found it be a very intersting program

On another matter watch the program to see the Koi !! I so wish i had a garden !! These things were HUGE !!!! Beautiful fish !

And the blue finned tuna !!! Those fish were mahoosive!! lol

What happens in slaughter houses is just as bad. Just the Japanese don't hide it behide closed doors.
Many animals are harmed and treated poorly but we don't think about that when you open a packet of bacon or sausages.
Just as long as it happens behide closed doors us from the west don't care

Is this the one where People in Villages have houses alongside streams. So that they make grated sections and keep Koi in them. The Koi eat all the leftovers from the Plates left in the streams.

Going to have to disagree with you there, in general slaughter houses are far more humane as they kill the animal before butchering. The japense might not 'hide it behind closed doors' but thats no excuse to inflict suffering on animals.

Please don't tar everyone in the 'west' with the same attitude towards meat, I agree though, too many people are indifferent to the welfare and treatment of animals but not everyone is. I know I certainly am not, I rear my own free range chickens and ducks for both eggs and for the table.

Please a slaughter house is anything but humane they only stun the animal before they start to cut the crap out of it even then it only to make it easier from them to hang it up. Some times they dont even get the chance to stun them they just start hacking away or just boil them to death.

Sorry but what a crap thing to say!!!!!!!!

Ok animals have to be slaughtered and the regulations in the UK make this very humane. This is perhaps not the place to talk about what happens but I've seen plenty of things and not just on TV.

I worked on a fish farm in my past and did several year on trout farms, where some fish was produced for food, so i have a good insight into that side of the industry.

Fish are killed very quickly. They are not just left to die as the stress hormones taint the flesh as with most animals when stressed to long, so doing things quick is a key.

Ok i may not liked what i saw in the Japanese film, at least they respected what they was eating and enjoyed it, like it said they over fish the sea's though....

I try to respect things for what they are and i like eating meat, so as long these animals have a good life i'll be happy eating them.

We used to rear Cattle for the meat market.. We did give them a good life as the number was only small but that was us
I once worked in a meat Factory beside an abattoir. The workers where always complaining about their equipment not working and often have to butcher the cows/pigs alive. Some times they don't even make it out of transport they been trampled to death

Sorry but you should have a better understanding than most!

Your know that if the main process ie electrocution is not working they have bolt gun's.....
Now if the gun dose not work then they should not be in business as simple to repair!!!

As for the transport things happen when your trying to get 20-30 cows or pig's in to a transporter, but it's the driver who should be inspecting the load.
When i was delivering fish i had to check every 20-30 mins that the fish was all alive and ok.

Many farmed animals have been transported a few times before their final trip so don't see it as being too stressful.

No idea about Dairy cattle but would of though they had an easy life apart from the male's
