I just got in mystery snails that I ordered. It does smell, but the little amount of water they came in was murky. I even got an extra snail; I ordered 5 and got 6. Their shells aren't hollow, so I'm assuming they are all in their shells. None of them are moving yet. The problem is they all have a bit of smell since they were sitting in murky water, I can't tell if they are dead.

I would fill a container with water from the tank they will be going into and place the snails in that. If they are alive they should emerge from their shells and begin to move around. If there's no sign after a few hours, lift them out one by one and sniff them again. Dead snails smell appalling so don't take a big sniff as it's the kind of smell that lingers in the nose for hours

Update: They have all moved from their original spots! One seems to be floating, but according to the little info sheet I got it may just have gas.
