I just came back from my fish club's annual fish expo and with some new buddies. I wanted to breed a new fish and I found it. A silent auction was taking place in one room and I bid and won a 3 gallon tank kit. I went to a different area and someone had a stand with killies and got me interested. He told me I could raise killies in my kit. The Blue Gularis caught my eye but he noted they need peat moss for breeding. I eventually got a pair of Gardneri (2 inches each) and a mop for the eggs. I got the pair for $6 and the mop for $1. I am going to add the pair to my 48 gallon soon that also contains Fundulus Chrysotus, Confluentus, skirt tetras, cherry barbs, and a mosquito fish. The purpose of this post is to help me, I guess this will be a semi-journal as I go through the process of killie breeding. Will fry be alright raised in a 3 gallon? I will post pictures of the killies soon if I can get any.

Also, is it possible the chrysotus might breed also when I add the mop?

you need to find out if they are plant or bottom spawners first
and if you are planning on selling its also a good idea to keep
the pair you are breeding seperate to stop cross breeding between
the different sp.
i am quite new to keeping killis myself but when hatching the eggs
they need to be placed into a clean plastic marge or butter tub with
a couple centimetres of water in just floating in the top of the
tank.if you search the speciese you have brought in the search section
at the top of this forum you should already find posts with questions
answered.ill be any help i can but being a newbi i cant offer much help.
keep the journal on here as you go and you should get corrected by someone
if something you are doing isn't quite right.also the top man to speak to
on here would be BIG C but he is currently in austrailia if you pm him
he will help as he has hell of alot more experience than any of us.
well do with the auctions anyway and sorry about my spelling its not
100% haha

mike

thats abit of info on the killi you already have
try seperating them feeding them on live foods
and try placing some plants on the bottom of the tank you should be able to see the eggs

This is where I got the pair from, anyone know the exact species?

They are most certainly Fundulopanchax gardneri nigerianus species. Its often hard to pin down a locational code if none was initially provided.
If you breed and sell them on then label them as Fp. gardneri nigerianus Aquarium Strain.

Just found out from the breeder that this species is Fp. Gardneri Lafia Gold.

Thats excellent.
At least you have the proper locational code and strain.
As I said earlier it's almost impossible to pin these slight differences down from photos as some gar. sp. and spp. can be quite similar.
See my pinned topic for the low-down on this and related gardneri species
