I have just purchased a 40-gallon aquarium from an lfs and would like to ask a few questions about equipment choices and stocking levels. First let me say that I have kept some of the more demanding species of reptiles so I know what kind of commitment is needed to properly take care of animals in the house. I have been nosing around the web and like two species the dwarf neon rainbow and the dwarf loach. Would a stocking rate of 16 rainbows and 5 loaches be all right or should I cut back on the rainbows? For the filter I liked the look of the aquacler what type of insert would be the best for this model, I am guessing from reading the stickeyed threads that mechanical floss then sponge would be ideal?

When it comes to rainbows, you really don't want a fully stocked tank. These are sensitive fish that benefit from being only moderately stocked. You will also need to be doing weekly 50% water changes.

I have an Aquaclear 70 filter. These filters do not use a typical insert. Instead it comes with a sponge, some bio media and a carbon bag. I would save the carbon bag for use when taking meds out of the water and use another sponge or bio media in it's place.

Thanks for the reply how many rainbows should i go with half the amount 3/4, if I cut back would the tank look a little empty? Maybee the addition of a dozen easy to grow plants would fill it out and provide a nice look if i should keep it lightly stocked.

Cool-aid, my own preference is for the planting like you suggested. The trouble is that any plants you might be able to grow will require at least a 40 watt light strip for a tank your size. If your tank is a 40 breeder like mine, that means a custom light fixture which can be a major investment. It depends how much value a planted tank has to you compared to some of the very nice silk plants that are available.
