So I am hoping to start cycling my fish to my tank within the next day or two, I just got my water testing done and it all looks good. As of now I have a 10 us gallon tank with some artifical plants, that will be switched with live after I move to my bigger tank and get that one all cycled.

I guess my question is, since I am moving to a bigger tank in a few months time, guessing around December / January after I save up some more money, would it be alright to purchase a few fish that have a maximum growth higher then what is recommended for a 10 gallon tank? Say some fish and some crabs and maybe a shrimp or two that requires a 20 gallon + sized tank for when they are fully grown. However when I am buying they will be nowhere near the full growth size.

In a nut shell, is it alright to buy bigger fish then recommended just for the fact that the tank will be an appropriate size long before they full grow.

Thank you for reading and answering,
Xes

Yeah, as long as you move them when they start to over grow the tank

I would just save your money and get the 20 gallon. Its better to get the tank and then the fish, between tanks you dont know what costs you will have maybe some unexpected ones? What fish do you have in mind? Also crabs dont mix with fish they will nip them and possibly eat them, but you will be okay with shrimp :) Wills

also most crabs will be no good with fish and red claw crabs are brackish

Well I already have my 10 gallon tank and was hoping I might be able to get the 20 or larger for Christmas or my birthday or something. So really I might not even be buying it. My job is decent so paying for a new tank would not be a problem at all, I just rotate between my car purchases and my other hobbies.

I read online that as long as the crab was not a big as the fish and they are well fed that it would not cause any real problem. Thank you for the advice however, I will stay away from the crabs.

As far as the cycling goes, I have had my tank set up and treated as well as the filter running and all of that. I was going to purchase some inexpensive fish at first because I am aware that the nitrogen cycle has not fully been completed so some deaths are to be expected. This way when they die and decompose it will overall help my tank and I am not losing a great expense. Don't get my wrong, I love fish and I want them to all live if possible, I am just being a realist. Then after the first month or so start cycling in the other fish and start setting gathering my other tank's equipment and start the water cycle early enough.

Sorry if none of that makes any sense, I am just really excited to start these tanks. My father has a 75g(or around there) tank when I was younger and I am remembering how much fun it was and the wonder it inspired.

Thank you and let em know what you think,

Yeah I would go fishless much easier to drop in a ml of ammonia each night than have the risks of deaths and disease in a tank. :) good luck!!
