I have a large first aid box with essentials for all my other animals here. I think it would be a good idea to have the same for my fish. So, what would the experienced aquaculturalists here recommend to buy for my kit? I am thinking along the lines of water treatments, medicines for common diseases and the like.

I'm an eSHa fan myself.

we keep the white spot treatment (EXIT) and the anti bacterial treatment (2000) in the cupboard.

We have Melafix, Pimafix, Interpet Anti fungus and Anti Internal Bacteria in our first aid kit. Stocked up just in case!

What kind of 'use-by' date do these medications have? I'm just curious if it's ok to have them hanging around for a long or if it'd be better for them to just buy them when we need it?

Most meds are good for a couple of years. Any decent manufacturer will put an expiration date on the package.

I keep metronidazole on hand, cichlids are sometimes prone to internal protizoans. Epsom salt doesn't go bad, it's good for constipation. Copper sulfate pentahydrate never goes bad either, and covers a wide range of bacterial, fungal, and protizoal problems. You have to be careful with copper, it will take out invertabrates & is easy to overdose algae eating fish if you have any algae in your tank. These 3 items get me through most anything until I can get something more specific in.

Off the top of my head, I have got:

Interpet Anti Internal Bacteria No.9
Interpet Swimbladder Treatment No.13
Interpet Aquarium Anti-Fungus No.8
Interpet Anti-White Spot Plus No.6
eSHa2000
Waterlife Protozin
Waterlife Myxazin
Waterlife Sterazin
Waterlife Cuprazin
Melafix
Pimafix
There must be some more in there though

I stocked up on Interpet stuff when I first started, either because I had problems with the diseases (fungus + swim bladder) or for just in case. I found them to be a bit pants and was recommended to try the Waterlife stuff and I've found it to be more effective, so I've ordered one of each for just in case

I was later advised that in the Interpet instructions, when it says to mix with 500ml of warm water, it means "pretty hot" water  not boiling, but hot to the touch  , since i was told that I have used them to greater effect :good: eSHA200 is pretty damn good at getting rid of fungus too ;)

Oh and most importantly lots of fresh clean water ;)

That might seem like a lot of meds, but I'd rather have them all in stock for when the fish get ill, cos sods law says I'll notice an illness at 9pm on a Saturday night and have to wait until the next day. I'd rather stock up on 4 or 5 bottles of £5 medication and throw them away each year as they are out of date but have them available if needed, than have to rush out to buy 1 bottle when needed, it means I can treat my fish quicker.

melafix - great for helping repair wounds, torn fins etc
pimafix - melafix's older stronger cousin! treats all sorts
protozoin - great for white spot
king british ws3 - also great for white spot
loads of water conditioner - never know when your gonna have to do an emergency big water change

thats about it tbh, well we have lots of other odds and ends knocking around but that's all we ever use.

i just keep a full anti bacterial medication and drips and drab of what evers left from when ive treated somthing more sinister :/

A bottle of tea tree oil and 2 litres of R/O water (these two combined form a home made melafix substitue which is a lot cheaper than the branded stuff)
Bottle of Interpet anti whitespot +
Bottle of Interpet anti fungus and finrot
Tub of Waterlife Paragon (brilliant if a new fish goes into shock from the moving process).
Pure salt (for salt baths if a fish has a nasty flesh wound)

If you keep melafix pimafix, some form of white spot treatment and some salt in your cupboard then you shouldn`t go far wrong

Just the basics.
Salt
Melafix
bacterial med
parasite med.
