Firemouth Tank Mates

well i wouldnt go for convict pair|<personal exsperience>the name says it all and they attack with lightning swiftness i had 1 pair of convicts in a tank with 1oscar 1 severum 1 female firemouth 1 greenterror they laid eggs then went into parent mode attacking anything what moved oscar died all others badly wounded....lovely fish but need a tank alone if pairing in my mind...green terror was also bad......my female firemouth is a git but ok she seems fine with my clowns n redtailed shark ..have a pair of keyholes which seem fine <placid cichlid

i have a pair od firemouths with,

1x keyhole,
2x female convicts,
1x albino shark,
1x rainbow cichlid,
1x severum,
3x plecos.

but in a bigger tank!


u could get a female convict just the 1.

Thanks for that info. I am not nearby so can't buy the fish of you . How much was it? I will go to Wildwoods and check them out.

Thats way overstocked. Convicts and Firemouths on their own would be a push at a happy tank let alone the rest of the stuff. If either species breeds you wont have anything else left.

I really wouldnt stock that tank with the above fish.

They're the recommended stocking suggestions for a tank your size. Firemouths aren't in there I'm afraid. It says to check out the 20g suggestions as they'd still be good - and reading them you could have one pair of a small cichlid (not including firemouths) and 5 tiger barbs or similar.

So one pair of small cichlids only, and no firemouths at all, I was wrong to think that they'd be ok in there on their own (never had them, assumed they would be) - but they need at least a 50g tank.

Edited to add - I give up, other sites say 20g, some say 25g, some say 50g, and I really cant speak from experience on that one.
