i bought just one white cloud minow today (only one because the lfs only had one and i thought he would be much happier in my group) bargin said 85p on the tank and i got charged 60p (about 1 dollar) acclimatised him 15 mins in the bag added some tank water left another 15 mins then fished him out (apparently alot of people dont risk lfs store water into thier tanks (oh side note i know there not allways tropical fish mut my tank sits at around 22C) anyway he fitted in straing the way although a little larger than my original minnows after a while i realised he wasnt flexing his dorsal fin at all it lay flat aganst his back his tail is also almost shrivvled up and sags down when not swimming.

i wouldnt of thought this to be a critical condition but i had a small goldfish from the same shop in the same sort of condition whom died within a few days, so has anyone got any ideas why he's like this and should i seperate him into the 2 gallon tank incase its infectious

thanks Sam

Clamped fins are a sign of stress, the tail do you mean it's rotting away, i would issolate him, once they struggle to swim when the fins are rotting they don't usually make it, but you could try a bacterial med on him, and increase aeration.

Myxazin.

ahh thanks id put it down to being a loan schooling fish in a tank of fancy goldfish then, ill get round to setting the 2 gallon up, would it be advisable to sit the tank next to the main one so he can still see his own kind

ooh waint no theres no fin rot its just not opening is clamped as you said

thanks for that, learn something new everyday :good:

Ok, he dosn't sound right to me.
Can you post test results in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
Its sounding like he's unable to maintain his swimming position is this correct, does he look bloated, is the tail dragging him down.

afraid i dont have any form of testing i plan to get myself a kit in the next week :/

wouldnt say he's bloated but yes the tail is deffinetly dragging him down and having trouble maintaining a swimming position ive filled the 2G half current tank water half rain water and added a small ammount of gravel out of the main tank, just giving it some time to adjust to room temperature, ive also decided to place it in a darker place hopefully to reduce stress.

many thanks again :)

darker place will definately reduce the stress alot.

it wouldnt surprise me if it looking like nothing but stress, but you cannot be too careful with your own existing fish. give him two weeks monitoring for changes.

can you advise if the fish was on a mass filter system at the lfs? if so alot will be stress from moving from the water stats of the store (also likely to be warmer than you have if on a mass filtered + heated system) to your own tank.

fingers are crossed for you

I more inclined to say bacterial infection, but he dosn't sound right and you might have to be prepared for losing him , sorry.

the single fish was in a tank no bigger than my own with 3 quite large fancy goldfish, cant exactly rember the filteration set up............i just had to buy him i know how much these guys love to school around and now he's no better off :X well hopefully a tank entirely to himself is less stessfull

:edit: he's not moving around much and the tail seems to be weighing him down so his nose is in the air doesnt look too good :(

interesting read there he's now resting on the bottom of the tank, all my healthy minnows are resting at the surface, he's still breathing and can move around, ill let you know tomorrow if he made it through the night

thanks again for your help

Had you thought of not shopping at this place as they've now sold you at least two dodgy fish!?!

id class hi symptoms as classically "tail-standing" and his reduction to the lower area of the tank is not a good sign.

holding the best thoughts for him.

Ok bless him, once siwm bladder has progressed there is no cure, and he dosn't sound good, but fingers crossed as fish sometimes can surprise you.

his dorsal fin is now erect he still doesnt move around like the healthy minnows do just given him a small ammount of food at least things havn't got worse then again they havnt got better :/
