Finrot Outbreak. Whats The Best Way To Treat It?

Thanks. When I change the water, do I leave carbon out of filter until next week? Do I leave nitrate and phosphate absorbers in?

and do I still add blackwater extract, tapsafe and fertiliser as normal?

Hi Neil,

Yes the carbon will remove the med so leave it out. The tapsafe yes still use, the other things I don't use so can't comment but I'm sure someone else will keep you right!

And please stick around, it is an good forum but I know what you mean about internet forums! Who was it said 'the most dangerous weapong in the world is a keyboard'.

wasnt a bit as in a chunk of tail, was a bit as in it was lovely and tidy, now is all rough!

I'll go ahead with a water change tomorrow night then, and we'll play it by ear. I'll keep you posted!

The carbon can be replace after 7 days of treatment.

Hi Neil,

If the tail has just suddenly lost a chunk it's possible some other fish has had a bite of it. I stand by my original advice that daily water changes are the way to go, although obviously 5teady disagrees. Hopefully soemone else will be along for a 3rd opinion. Do the water change anyway, any chance of a pic?

Welcome to the fish forums, btw! And sorry you've somewhat had a baptism of fire, it's usually a really friendly place.

I just disagree cos the medications do help, otherwise whats the point in having them? interpet is really good but melafix, pimafix, and myxazin is top stuff and rapdily cures and stops it. (i do agree waterchanges helps a lot, but just nothing compared to what the meds do)

I agree the guppy should not of lost its tail that fast, possibly the clown loaches?

I guess it's all down to personal experience, my best results when curing anything have been daily water changes, that's I've only ever done for finrot anyway. I rescued an angel fish 2 months ago with very bad finrot, it's now completely cured and that was only water changes. On the other hand I lost 2 guppies through finrot (rescued fish again) I hospitalised and treated with myxazin and melafix and still lost them. I can only comment on what I've experienced.

Can you remember them bettas i rescued not long back? the melafix and myxazin combined healed them within 1 monthand they had next to nothing in fins all over them, basically a body lol.

I agree a lot of it is own experience, but i have always though it is best to give the advice that is most common and usually done, like if a fish has finrot, u use finrot meds, velvet, u use velvet meds, etc... and we better this by telling people the best meds on the market like melafix and pimafix and myxazin and protozin etc

Waterchanges aint exactly a proven cure, its just it helps the fish to recover itself where meds physically do a job they are made to do and waterchanges enhance the chances as well.

I hear what you're saying. I'm the type of person who'd be having a brain haemorhage before I'd take a paracetomol, and I don't like medicating my tanks unless I really have to. Sorry we disagree on this one but I would always try and cure an ailment by getting the water conditions right before resorting to medication, although it def has it's place and is very useful when necessary. IMO if it were me with the problem OP describes, I would try a few water changes before going down the chemical route, although that all depends on how bad it is. But if he only noticed it today ie it's only appeared overnight (and he sounds like the kinda guy who would pay close attention) it can't be that bad.

However, we're never going to agree on this one, so I submit. :flowers:

Probably best lol, cos i dont quit...

There is not a lot of disease etc though that just waterchanges will treat, if there is a problem on a fish, it needs medication to help IMO, just like us, we need medication etc to help us heal, without them, we would possibly get worse or even die without them if our body was able to self heal and even if it could it would take a much longer period (this is the main reason for meds), same for fish.

I completely understand what u r saying, everyone has thier own way of doing things, its just yours aint exactly textbook ways lol, but if it works for you, then thats ok.

I will always use meds as i belive the ones i use do a very good job and my fish goes through far much less stress and pain with them.

:)

Aint it time to upgrade from that scooter yet? get a bigger one

Alas, I ain't been on a scooter since my son was born, that was 4 years ago! But I've been 'scooterchick' on internet forums for years, it's kinda stuck. 2 wheels ain't so appealing when you've someone else to be responsible for, and a dog, and a cat and umpteen fish!

Never!! Too mumsy. Rover 75 estate, fantastic car.

Update time!

Another female guppy (I think its from the same batch of fry as the 1st) had developed some finrot on her pectoral fins. The tail on the original had got worse.

I did a 40%ish water change on Friday and I took the Melafix approach. It seems to be working! 3 days treatment so far and the symptoms have slowed and the fish do not seem to have gotten any worse :) It smells nice too! Bonus! :good:

The final treatment day is Friday, and waterchange again on Saturday, so all being well the girls will be back on the road to recovery! Can someone tell me, do their fins/tails grow back? My dad keeps Koi, and theirs don't!

Thier fins will grow back yes :)

Are you just using melafix?

If you had of got the myxazin as well and treated with both, this would of been even better and would boost the healing process ;)

The aquatic store had only melafix and pimafix.....I hadn't heard of pimafix so just went for the 1. Seems to be working though!

Another update. Lost a guppy! The other seems to be under control and hasn't rapidly deteriorated health wise like the other did.

It was last treatment today, so freshen up tomorrow!

BUT....I have a new issue! 2 of my white cloud mountain minnow have lost their left eyes. Is this linked to disease? Or is it linked to community problems? I have 2 sailfin mollies that can be a bit boysterous, also 6 guppies, 8 cardinals, 3 clowns and 6 various small loaches.
