Tank size:length 28 1/2", width 19 1/2", depth 14"
pH:7.8
ammonia:0ppm
nitrite:0ppm
nitrate:40ppm
kH:?
gH:?
tank temp:26 degees cellcius

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior):Fish have been getting white sections on fins and these rot off i lost 1 male betta,4 lrg neons,2 marble hatchett, and 2 diamond tetras also the two neons seem to have devolped milky patches in the centre of there eyes im guessing maybe cloudy eye.

Volume and Frequency of water changes:40% every wednesday

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank:dechlorinator nutrafin aqua plus, plant ferts nutrafin plantgro 15ml weekly, used Myxazin to treat finrot started 5 day course after a water change 18-1-12 used filter media for 2 weeks after treatment.Tank up and running 1 year, Tank filtration fluval 2 and and fluval u4 (u4 added 2 months ago) internal filters sponges changed alternatley , heater fluval, 2x18" Arcadia bulbs.

Tank inhabitants:1 female betta,1 marble hatchett,1 bristlenose cat,2 neons,1 rainbow shark,1 diamond tetra and 1 red clawed freshwater crab. i know neons dianonds and hatchetts need more mates but i wont add anything until ive solved the problems i have.

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration):Tank decor is 3 small pieces of bogwood, 1 purple slate cave, java ferns and another plant im not sure of it grows quite fast with small soft bright green leaves and roots that drape down from the upper parts. I remove any plant matter that falls off every couple days.

Exposure to chemicals:eek:nly thing i can think of here is that theres a tumble dryer in the adjoining open room i have allways been suspect of this but my tank location was chosen due to the old tank springing a leak. Soon as i get this sorted ive got a fluval roma 240 being prepared for relocation but i want to use the existing water and filter medias, decor ect from this existing tank to run the new tank and equipment in with.

Digital photo (include if possible):can only just type msgs lol i dont do tinternet much

Im from the british isles by the way and the tank is located out of direct sunlight fish that have finrot now are just ont tetra on the dorsal but my rainbow and betta keep getting a split in the tail every now and then this doesnt look like the usual symptons tho and seems to heal itself over twenty four hours (this only happens with these twp fish ) the other fish that have had finrot have all died in the end except for the bristlenose who seemed to recover his fins are still a bit tatty tho but he seems ok.

I also estimate the tank to be carrying around 30 uk gallons of water.

i dont know what kh and gh mean please advise or point me in the right direction for more info plz

no detergents used in cleaning tank items and filter madia cleaned in tank water

sorry i havnt any advice as im a newbie myself, but thought i would answer so you dont think your being ignored

Is the tank 120-130 litres? I think the initial cause of the fin damage is the inadequate filter you had for so long in a tank that size(Fluval U2?) which is only 400lph or your crab is a constant fin nipper and your fish eventually got bacterial infection :fun: When you say you change the filter pads what do you mean, completely new ones?
When did the finrot start and how often do you test your water for ammonia and nitrites?

You do need to treat your fish with medication though as it seems now the infection has settled in. Finrot is more likely caused by bacteria but parasites can be another initial cause and fungal infection may follow the bacterial depending how long and how bad the fish have it.

I'm with snazy, the occasional rips are probably down to the crab. As for the cause, under-filtration causing ammonia and nitrite exposure. Stressed fish, lowered immune system, infection sets in. I wouldn't completely change the filter sponges at all, just squeeze in tank water alternately.

Plus kh is karbonate hardness, gh is general hardness.

the tank is 135 litres and has internal filters with no undergravel filters i only change one sponge out of 2 in each filter every 6 months (not changed any in U4 yet)and only clean the sponges in tank water. I vacume 1/2 the gravel once a week but not around plant roots (i do move the gravel round in these areas tho' incase of air pockets).

Ive only purchased the testing kit yesterday as ive kept fish for a few years and had crabs (in the tank lol) with no problems at all. Ive allways kept a strict maintenance routine changing water weekley and renewing tired equipment.

im going to re home the crab asap anyway as i want to get a good live gro going in the new tank but to be honest he dosnt bother the fish .

feeding for the fish is flake and freeze dried b/w every other day and a few garden peas, cucumber or ham once a week for the catfish and the crab is given a small piece of ham by hand once every 2-3 days or as soon as i see the little "####" eating the few plants i have.

Could probabley do with a little more advice on testing if poss pls the results above are from 8pm gmt yesterday and the first test i have ever done the tank was tested at the lfs over a month ago and the results were the same.(i followed the instructions to the letter and advice from the forum making sure i gave the nitrite or nitrate bottle a good tap and shake to mix it up).

I last changed the water 40 % 23/02/12.

what do KH and GH mean?.

Catfish eating ham? o_O What kind of ham? Doesn't that contain salt? (if it is the kind of ham I'm thinking of, that pressed salty ham that's pinkish)

salt content is 1.6g per 100g for the cooked ham its the sandwich ham from asda (wallmart) i only feed this in a small amount maybe once a month to the cat fish but once or twice a week for the crab the day before a water change.

my finrot appeared before i started putting ham in the tank.

I didn't say that it would be related to finrot, just wanted to know more about fish diet and what they could survive eating. Then again, my turtle loves boiled, fried, roasted or grilled chicken and only baked fish. Will refuse raw meat or shrimp, so I guess fish can eat unusual stuff too. o_O

no thanks for the help i looked briefley in the pleco section and they all say theyre veggies naturally so i will stop feeding ham anyway just to be on the safe side thanks

Only thing that I'd fear about is that ham contains some substances that they'd put in it to look good and not expire fast. So, I guess it's a good decision to remove it from the peco's diet as it could cause him some other damage.

thanks makes sense i should of known better really with the additives they put into food these days.
