Finding The Balance.

Does the stuff that you've been dosing with Squid include CO2 - you know, the 'plus' or the 'excel' etc versions?

I kind of agree & disagree with (myself), I'm not really completely saying its pointless per se, because there WILL be some CO2 in the water anyway, but in a manner if the CO2 is limited, then you'd have to be extra careful with subsequent dosing - a large % of it will be useless - do you see where I'm coming from??

Anyway, to get that CO2 into the water, I DIY'd a Barr modified Venturi Reactor. Heavens above do those things work! My CO2 doubled in 3 days from a lousy 12-14ppm using Nutrafin CO2 yeast kit with a ladder, to just under the magical 30ppm.

Other 'passive', off the shelf options include a 'Rhinox' diffuser and Spiro diffuser (not as good, but look cool) - ebay time!

Not sure if it includes any carbon in my dose... its not very forthcoming with what it includes. (there was my first clue i guess ;) ) perhaps i will just keep the dose down until the rest of the plants are added.

Im intrigued with this modified venturi reactor.. where do you get one of these.. Perhaps a homemade DIY co2 kit with sugar and yeast and one of these maybe a good bet. Doubling the CO2 by change of diffuser alone sounds great ...

Thanks again

Tom Barr's mod is to have the outlet from the power head not pointing down into the tube, rather horizontally as to cause a kind of water cyclone within the tube (think dyson) - the CO2 is injected into and hence risies through this cyclone. The Venturi principle involves taking the partially mixed CO2 / H2O back to the inlet (i.e. low pressure) of the power head further mixing the CO2.

All bits were avaialable from (ahem AHEM) pets at home for about £25. I guess you can get power heads cheaper elsewhere. I used an AquaClear 127US Gal/pH Power Head that cost £20 and the end off a gravel vac.
