I've finally planted my juwel tank properly, I just ordered 98 plants and chucked most of them in, some went in my other tanks.

The tank's a bit cloudy because I squeezed / broke up the moss balls in it(should have done it in a bucket!)

I'd love some constructive critisism and / or comments :)

What plants have you got in there BTW?
How are the plants spaced distance wise?
Oh, and what is the substrate?

Andy

Thanks everyone :)

What plants have you got in there BTW?

Not sure on the red ones as they were part of a collection and were just named red species, the rest are;

Twisted Vallis
Giant vallis
Hygro Polysperma
Hygro corymbosa(this was already in the tank and growing really well)
Egeria
Camboba Caroliniana
Creeping Jenny
Bacopa Monnieri
Amazon Sword
Dwarf Chain sword
Carpeting Saggiteria
Glossostigma Elatinoides
Cladophora aegagropila(moss ball) laid flat

Think that's all of them, I'm sure I'll have missed some.

How are the plants spaced distance wise?

It varies, some it's an inch apart, other's it's half an inch

Oh, and what is the substrate?

It's just plain old sand :)

Yep its looks good you just know those bichirs are thinking lunch

The bichir's might be thinking 'lunch' who knows, all I do know is they've lived peacefully with both bn plecs for over 4 months now and there have been no insidents or near misses. I think my bichirs have forgotten they are predators, they are very timid and won't touch anything moving. If one of the plecs is chomping on a bit of their fish they just leave it and search for another piece. My bn plecs are tough little guys they pick on my gold gouramis sometimes, chasing them if they go near their cucumber LOL!

Looks ok its not technically planted as you have just added them. They may not take, red plants need lots of light. Are you adding CO2 and fertilisers?

Do the moss balls need to be broken up like that? Or doesn't it really matter either way?

No I just did that as I thought it looked better, I might take it out completely as it's a form of algae and it will prob die once the plants take over.

LOL it's the closest to fully planted I've got so I'm not too bothered whether it's technically planted, it'll do for me :) I don't expect the red plants to survive as like you said they need alot of light and I only have 1.45 wpg, I am adding ferts and I will be getting a couple of nutrafin kits for CO2 soon.

Tell that to my A. reineckii which did quite well in 1.4 WPG, and they will laugh at you. You just have to know which species of red plants do well. Have a read at the 20g journal in my signature. It is a very similar setup, just smaller, but it shares some common characteristics, inert substrate (you have sand, I have small gravel), lower light, Nutrafin CO2 (if you choose to get it). Note the plant species, it will save you a lot of trouble deciding which plants work and which do not. In addition, I've got an easy plant list in my sig as well. If you can manage a close-up of the red plants I'll let you know what you've got. Many shops grow plants not normally so red under very bright metal hallides, making them turn red. Once in the home aquarium they settle down to a more natural color.
