well my spotted gar comes tuesday have wonted one of these for ages question what tank mates would be ok with him ie midas texas jags ornate bichir rainbow snake heads

Hi.
I have many Gars and mix them well with Polypterus.

The snakehead will eventually become a meal for the Gar or the Ornate. (Especially the Ornate, trust me).

my tank is 7ft long so my rainbow snake heads wont be able to live with these guy for long then hmm looks like im breaking out my spare tank

Lovely looking fish John! Almost dinosaur-looking.
Although they've got quite an appetite- i've seen one eat a fire eel the same size as him!
Be great to see some pics when he arrives :)

well he come's tomorrow along with a rainbow snake which i will wont iding by you guys as the guy i bought of was vague on the type. Im just wondering if he will be ok with my jags and my midas as i have a large south american cichlid tank would the gar be ok in here when older of course as he is only 4inchs at present plenty of large tanks to do some moving around in so advce needed please

The Bleheri (rainbow snakehead) is SUB TROPICAL.
It can't be kept with tropicals like the Gar, Cichlids etc. Needs to be kept 16c-20c in the Autmn/Winter and 20c - 23/4c in the Summer.
They are VERY prone to bacterial infections when kept higher.

Also, though they are snakeheads, they are one of the smallest and one of the least aggressive. They will be picked on until they are killed by the Cichlids/Gar.

Your Gar should be fine with the Cichlids, but will need to be grown out a bit first.

Also, your "Spotted" Gar will most likely be a "Florida" Gar. Post pics, and I can identify it for you.

Here is old prize winning pic of my male Bleheri:
