Finally Got My First Batch Of Malawis

I hate to say it, but it is kinda trial and error with cichlids. I am new to this as well, but I am doing my best to prevent further casualties. Hopefilly redoing your tank will better establish territories and keep you from having more casualties. I don't think i will have anymore right now, but we will see what happens when I add the next batch of 4

Lovely looking fish, never owned malawi's before but to my eyes that tank doesnt look anywhere big enough to accomodate them? They looked very busy in the video you linked, but it didnt look like like a "fun" event to me, but a rather stressful one...

Very curious about setting up one of these tanks myself so i'll be watching this thread to see how you get on! :D Gluck!

It's a 4ft 55g tank. Which is recommended for the type of malawis I am keeping. They are actually very active fish. Not in the stressful sense either. They are just constantly on the move, exploring, building new landscape and what not. There was some stress, I am sure, as I shot that video on day two. They have since then sorted out their areas and have simmered down some. They do still move around ALOT. The other thing is, I am understocked as far as Malawis go. I do not have a big enough group for there to be harmony, as its best for them to be slightly overstocked. Each fish being about 4-5 inches, I should have 10 in there, but I couldn't afford to buy all ten at once lol. I am going to add some more when I get paid.

Is it the recommended minimum size? I understand you need to over stock to reduce agression with 1 male to several female and do roughly 1/3 of the tank as rockwork so they have bolt holes...but i cant see that working very well in a 4 footer, they are such chunky fishies! Looking forward to seeing how it develops as you add more. :D

We will see. If I have to get a bigger tank, looks like I'll be on craigslist :p

Oh wait, I am an idiot. I rehomed my Severums yesterday because my Jewel started getting feisty again. Looks like a long night. She will be moving into the 55g with the Synodontis, and I am rebuilding the 75g as a Malawi tank. It's still a 4ft tank, but its 18inches deep instead of 12.

Lol, forward planning a its best eh? :D

It pays to have a lot of big tanks around the house :p Allows a way to fix mistakes. I appreciate your input very much :)

I have been eyeballing extra 55 and 75 gallon glass to have around myself :p. Will have extra filters again once I get a new motor for my fluval... bad thing is If I have a viable tank setup I will want to fill it...

Tizer, to give you another idea, all my Malawis at B.E were in a 4ft tank! :p

They have been in Aylesbury and now B.E since May/June and they have all nearly doubled in size but still... lot more fish than the OP!! Though we never had fighting.
