Hey everyone,

I'm relatively knew to this whole betta experience. I love my fish, Sarc. I'm concerned about potential fin rot. He is so playful, energetic and hungry! The guy doesn't appear lethargic at all. I know his water condition is good because I watch it tediously. Do you think this is fin rot or could it be a torn fin from him playing around? I recently rearranged the inside of his tank to give him some different areas to swim through. He loves to pass through and around his "sunken pots". I would appreciate any advice! Thank you.

It could be fin biting or his fins are getting caught on any fake plants you might have. Any plants in a betta tank should usually be silk, or preferably real, as their fins get easily caught on irregular surfaces. The rule of thumb is that if you touch the decor and it is rough/ causes you even minor discomfort, its best not to put it in your tank.

I also recognize that little jar decoration you have in your tank. Something similar to this yes?

The thing about these ornaments is that the insides can be fairly rough with sharp, pokey edges that our long finned friends easily get snagged on. I'd recommend sanding down the inside and edges to make them safe. The best way to tell if its sharp is to run the pad of your finger inside, if its rough/sharp its not suitable for a betta tank or any fish with delicate fins.

Thank you so much! I'll take a look at them today. So you don't think it's fin rot?

Personally the fins look torn to me at the edges, but I can't really tell if they are browning. If the edges of the fins are browning/nearly black that means they are rotting. If clear that's usually a sign they are growing back. How often do you change your water by the way and at what quantities? Do you vacuum his gravel when you do so?

Can you provide us with your water parameters? Nitrates, Nitrites, Ph, ammonia, and alkalinity?
