so why do the fins dissapear what causes this and why dont all the fish have it

and how the hell do you get rid of it

Fin rot is an infection. Poor water quality can contribute to it, but it's not the only cause.

I'd make a post in emergencies, and be sure to include tank size, full stock list, any recent additions or deaths, and specific water stats (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph).

fins can also be chewed off by other fish in the tank.
With actual finrot the fish that become infected are those that have been damaged by bad water or fighting or stress. Then the bacteria can get into the area and cause problems. Healthy fish can usually fight off any minor infections and don't develop the problem. Thus the weaker fish develop the disease and others don't.

A general broad spectrum anti bacterial medication should get rid of it. But check the water quality first to make sure that isn't what caused it initially.
Often doing daily partial water changes and gravel cleans for a week wil clear up minor cases. Salt can also be used and will also help minor cases but more advanced infections will need medicating.

thanks lads what i thought

ok been to the lfs had water tested
its all fine
is "fine" really "FINE" you ask, well i looked at the colour chart.....
results as follows
amonia o
nitrite o
ph lovely colour blue
nitrate 0.1
so i have got some myaxzin, and some salt
and i have taken the filter out(kept in some original tank water) untill i put filter back in,in six days, now my tank is a lovely colour blue

oh yeah its a 70 ltr tank and i had

4 tiger barbs 1 left
5 cardinal neons 5 left
1 guppie 1 left
4 black mollys 2 left
1 ruby shark 1 left
1 red tail shark 1 left

so we shall see now what happens but none of the fish are showing any signs
as the ill looking one has died
oh yeah the molly that died, its fins were first to be looking funny,it actually turned silver
and its back end went very stiff and thin and tail wasnt flowing

Waterlife Myxazin shouldn't affect the filter bacteria. If there is no filtration in the tank then cut the feeding right back and monitor the ammonia levels. If it goes up then do a bit water change and re-treat the tank. Alternatively you can add some Ammogon (or Zeolite) and it will absorb ammonia from the water.
Ammogon is a white granulated substance that absorbs ammonia from fresh water. "Wardleys Ammogon" should be available from most petshops.

If the filter isn't fed while it is out of the tank then the bacteria will die off. You should keep it running and feed it on bits of fish food or liquid ammonia. It won't need much but a little bit each day should help keep the bacteria happy.

was told by the lfs to take it out plus it says on the instructions to remove carbon filter's(black sponge)????

You only want carbon out - you want the filter and the regular biological media in, or you'll risk an ammonia spike.

ok getting really fed up now

update
4 tiger barbs 1 left-all gone they seemed to lose there colour, well the black stripes any way
5 cardinal neons 5 left-4 left, the tail of the cardinal was completely gone
1 guppie 1 left
4 black mollys 2 left
1 ruby shark 1 left
1 red tail shark 1 left

ok so now my red tail shark is no longer red hows that work????
when i gave them some blood worm, the other day the colour came back, but now its gone again!!!!
but my ruby shark has kept all its colours....
really begining to not enjoy this hobby losing fish all the time costing me a fortune
helpppppppppp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I suspect you've got a trouble maker in the tank, possibly one of the sharks - but I'm not sure.

And as stated above, you can treat Myxazin with filter in tank - the only bit to remove is the carbon as the carbon eliminates chemicals in the water.

trouble maker????

ok not thinking straight i did leave the filter in the tank just i took out the black sponge carbon thingy lol

You should only keep one Shark per tank, they are notorious for fighting both the same species as themself, as well as thoses closely related. This would explain why the Redtails tail is nolonger red. As he is been bullied by the more dominant Ruby/Rainbow.

ok thanks but i was told i could mix them

but not mix 1 or more of the same

the ruby/rainbow dosent chase a lot of the other fish,a lot of the time only now and then and its not for a long time either only from one side of the tank to the other, not for any length of time

If one doesn't die in the mean time, I'd still consider rehoming it - they are known for being aggressive, and are not a community fish. Not to mention the fact that he'll outgrow your tank.

I'd seriously consider rehoming him, but am curious to hear what the likes of BigC or MissW would advise.

The RTS has most likely lost his colour through stress and as you have 2 "sharks" in a fairly small tank they are bound to fight.

I would rehome the rainbow and see if the red tail perks up, although I would still advise a bigger tank for the RTBS in the furture when he is bigger.
