Fin Rot!

I have a betta in a filtered 2 gallon tank who has fin rot. I am of the assumption that i can treat this as i would any other fin rot ie: off the shelf med?
I was planning on a complete tank makeover, should i leave this till after i have treated him?

If it's still pretty minor, I would just keep his water SUPER clean and add some aquarium salt to his water. If it's more advanced (a lot of finnage missing and it's getting close to his body), you can treat with an antibiotic.
