my sunset platy has this white sort of fungus or something in between the fishes scales, i don't know what to do because i am not quite sure what it is? It's all over the top of his head and scales...it first started on one of my platy's head then it's spread along the body, even one of them has these three random white spots on her tail, please tell me what it is as i can only see it under the blue night light of my tank. It only seems to be on the platys so i don't know what it is, is it natural? :S

Hello,

Can you provide a picture of this 'fungus' that you have?

Fungus will appear as a tuff of white/grey matter before turning into a fluffy cotton wool like growth. If the scale has been damaged and you can see a reddening anywhere, fungus will draw it's nutrients from this wound and bacteria may also infect the wound.

If it is a fungus you will need to physically remove it with, ironically, a piece of a cotton wool. You then go on to disinfect it and apply a liquid designed to aid healing called Propolis. These sorts of task can be conducted with this product.

I highly advice that you provide a picture though as it may not be a fungus growth.

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
Tank temp.

It sounds like columnaris to me if it's fluffy on the head and white edging around the scales.
How big are the spots on the fish. Are they the size of a grain of salt.

HIYA AGAIN...i've already told you all about my tank from before...the spots on the tail of my platy are the size of a grain of salt...i'm not sure if they are white or seethrough as she moves alot

Sorry.
The info was on another thread.

If the spots are the size of a grain of salt you could be dealing with whitespot.
Are there any signs of flicking and rubbing, laboured breathing.

OMG! Is that why my sunset fish have randomly been rubbing against plants? My dad said they where doing this mating thingy, the gills area is red but i think that's just the colour of the sunset fish...And what do you mean by laboured breathing?

It sounds like whitespot then.

Laboured breathing looks like there fish are having trouble breathing.

Check your water stats.
Water change.
Add a whitespot med.
Increase aeration.
Remove black carbon from filter.
Raise temp to 30.

water stats are fine, no black carbon in filter already, airation i think is WAY ENOUGH got a bubbleator and 2 filters in there, as for the temp it for tropical fish it's at 25C...at 30 other fish will start having trouble...she's doesn't seem to have laboured breathing though...and it was ages ago when she was rubbing against plants...i'm not sure if i should add med incase i'm wrong and the fish suffer because of it

I will get you a pic of whitespot.
It can affect the fins first.

The high temp fine as long as there plenty of aeration in the tank. The high temps speeds the life cycle of the parasite up.

kk ty...btw what will happen if i do put in med and they don't have anything wrong with them? will it damage the fish?

A pic of whitespot.

Do any other fish have tiny white spots on them.

oh!!! no the spots aren't that small! they are much bigger and there's only 3 on her tail, my mum said it was just discolouration. And no no other fish have white spots on them.

Ok.
Do the spots look hard or soft like filled with fluid.
Any redness to the spots.
Do the spots resemble a cauliflower of a cluster of eggs or berries.

For now add some myxazin by waterlife, and pimafix.

none of the above i think...hang on...i'll try and get a pic and have a friend put it on...

Fish can get columnaris spots. They sometimes have a circling of red on the outside of the spots, or a red centre.
The spots can be flat, or slightly raised.
I would still add the myxazin to the tank.

If the spots are bigger than a grain of salt and they don't look like berries, it sounds bacterial.
