Hi guys,

I got my betta a week ago..his name is sushi....I'm pretty amateur at this stuff....but had doubts whether this was fin rot or fin growth..he seems to be eating fine, swimming around...no problems...here are pictures let me know what you think.

Thank you :) ! That's such a relief! I was almost at the verge of buying him medication. Petsmart people had no idea what it was when I showed them the pictures.

lovely coloured betta...

to me that looks like fin growth rather then fin rot

Alright so now..he has these white strings coming off from his fin.....and hes not eating.....i just did a 75% water change, temp at 80 deg....is it fin rot?

Dear anusingh88, Maybe you can post new pictures of these strings as from your original photos he looks fine. How long have you had him? Sometimes moving to a new home can upset them to a point where they won't eat for several days. Don't worry as they can go without food for over a week at least.

I am no expert on fin rot, but I would suggest you post some new photos and then one of the more experienced guys will be able to guide you. How long have you had Sushi and did he first eat and then stop eating or has he not eaten at all? Also - what are you feeding him and do you know what the LFS was feeding him while he was there? Betta can be picky if they are used to a certain food.

Hey!

So I'm guessing he just missed me a little bit, I was away for two days, but made sure I fed him before I left. He is in a five gallon tank, and I have had him for less than two weeks now. I have a heater for him, and plants. I'll post pictures as soon as I get home today.

When I came home on sunday night, he was underneath hiding under the rocks and didn't respond to me at all. So I did a quick water change (75%), because he wasn't eating. So once I changed the water, I let him be for the night, stuck around a little bit for a while and he would start swimming again.

On Monday morning,I fed him a pellet, the pet store had been feeding him the same pellets that I was giving him. He had one pellet, but didnt respond to any more. So for monday, he has had two pellets (atleast he's eating something!)

This morning I woke up, he was all happy, swimming around, following me around when I pass by his tank, fed him a pellet, he went for it instantly. So im guessing it was the water, but I had done a water change last tuesday (25%).

Although the white string things are still on his fins, he is happy and bubbly and eating and swimming fine. I shall post pictures tonight (Canada time).

Thanks for all your help!

Hiya, as your betta has sounded to be a bit on and off with his food and things i'd do a 50% water change every day adding back dechlorinated water and testing it every 2 days for nitrites, nitrates and ammonia.
Its probably due to the water do you have filteration and do you add decholrinated water?

I don't have a filtration system, and yes I do add dechlorinated water....I'll be taking the water to get it tested tomorrow.

Also, I had a live plant before, but it seemed to be withering a bit so I removed it, but the plant left behind snails in my tank, i have removed as many as i could, i guess the plant had some eggs on it. Could these snails affect my fishy?

Personally i'd use a small filter such as a mini elite, or a stingray 5 because i traps any bits of bad bacteria and gives the water a push around the tank.
hmm, sometimes when you buy live plants they have tiny snails on them, i dont think they would do any harm as they just slime around, if they were on the plants when you bought them ( you probably didnt know ) then i dont think its a problem, also they must be aquatic if they were on the plant ( off the water from where you got it. ) so thats fine.
I think its essentail to have a live plant, personally i have an elodea - grows well and only need a bit of light.
So let us know your test results and see about getting a plant or 2.
How bigs your tank?

Hey guys,

I have added some pictures, but they dont really seem to show the little white strings coming off his body. First three pics were old, last three are new.

my tank is 5 gallons, im going to get the water tested tomorrow...

But see at the end of his fins, how its kind of curling inwards....and the top fin the ends seem funny.

Thanks for your help!

Honistly i don't see anything wrong with him, the white on the ends of his ventrils(?) is his colouring i'd say from the pictures he's fine.

He is such a pretty fish by the way. I had one similar to him. I loved the way his scales shone blue when you looked at it just right. Just like yours.

thank you! he is a very handsome buy. Right now he is swimming a lot in his tanks, and he ate 4 pellets today! ....However it does look like there is this white sheen of cotton like thing along his body....

Should i do a 100% water change and clean out the gravel and what not?

those "little white strings" are growth of his fin rays. the clear membranes in between is growth of the fin membrane. takes a while to color up. he is perfect!
