I have a 20 US gal tank in my room, in it is my Male Betta, a female Dalmatian Molly, a Panda Cory and 3 Otto's (Not ideal stock but I'm working on it, this is my misfit tank)
Anyways I recently redid the substrate and added the 3 Otto's, I guess this stressed my Betta out a little bit and he has developed a mild case of fin rot. I've successfully treated it before with water changes. But my method is 20% every other day with a small dose of salt. I can't add salt with the Panda in there. So I decided to try some of the medication I got with the 20 gal, it's called Melafix, it's API. Anyways on the bottle it says to remove all activated carbon from the filter prior to treatment. My problem is that the filter I use has those handy-dandy pouches that come with everything in them. I'd need to remove those in order to treat, but than I'd be removing a good portion of the bacteria from my filter and I'd start a new cycle in the tank, which would not be good for my poor fin rot boy.
So I was wondering if there was a way around this, if I didn't have to re-cycle my tank to use the meds, or if I didn't even have to use the med's at all.
Any advice anyone has to give would be lovely (I don't like using chemicals in my tanks, but the Melafix came with the tank so I figured I'd try it... But I don't want to have to re-cycle the tank to use it.)
