Fin Marking

You see it a lot in zoos and marine parks where they nip out a section of dorsal fin, or ear (if the animal is not a fish!) so that they can tell the identity of an animal without having to get too close or capturing it.

Does anyone with for example a breeding group of identical angels, or identical male cichlids do this?

I can image it would be useful to know which male had sired some fry and therefore know the genetics for further breeding.
