For Tangs in a 29 gallon I have a whisper 30 on it and I own a 170 penguin which is still in the box. I thought either the 170, or a 125 penguin w/small canister, or the 170 w/small canister.

:dunno:

i would chuck the whisper. i have never had good luck with them. the motor seizes, they are loud and get louder as they age.

i am a big fan of marineland products. i feel they make a quality product. the penguin is designed for the smaller tanks such as your 29. even though it is overkill for your tank, but you own it already i would put the 170 to use. when you are choosing a filter you want to check the gph (gallons per hour) of the filter or pump. you want a filter that will turn over the water at a minimum of 3 times an hour. to figure the gph you would need you need to take the size of your tank and multiply it by three. for your size tank you would need a gph of 87. the penguin 170 has a gph of 170, hence the name. so it would turn over your a little under 8 times an hour. you could also go with the 125, not as much overkill as the 170.
