I have a 180 litre fish tank with a fluval U4 internal filter would I need a canister filter or should I be fine.

Well the U4 can handle a 200L tank according to the box but it does depend on the type of fish you keep. My Goldfish would require extra filtering as they are so dirty so I double up my filters.

That way I know I am not overloading one filter and it also covers me if one should break down and there is a delay on repair.

The beauty of externals is they take up no space inside the aquarium and you have an instant syphon for draining the tank.

Water changes are so much easier and if you work it out you can even use the filter to pump the new conditioned water back into the tank. No more buckets over the top of the tank.

Yes, it very much depends on the individual set-up. I personally prefer externals for ease of cleaning.
