Hello everyone,

I have had an empty 1800mm x 650mm x 450mm fish tank for six months and now is the time to set it up, i've decided to go for a planted tank, sand and gravel bed with shoals of community fish, i've had smaller tropical tanks a long time ago. My question is what filtration would i need for this tank?

Agree, you may need a huge trashcan like the FX5 or you may try to acheive it with two of the more normal cannisters (of the largest size) sitting at each end. truck can correct me but I believe its quite popular still with the planted hobbyists to try to move 10x turnover or even more still. Even if you couldn'e effectively acheive 10x in a tank that large you could supplement the circulation with some Koralias.

Besides getting very even plant nutrient distribution I believe the primary concern is making sure the flow can clear out any pockets or dead spots where slight ammonia concentrations (below testing level) will trigger algae, given all the light that can be available in a planted tank. You're aware of our planted section, right?

I have got 2 x fluval 304's and 3 x hydor koralia 3 circulation pumps, if that's not enough i could always rig up an undertank sump with a oceanrunner 3500 pump or is that over the top?
i didn't know about the planted section thanks for letting me know.
