Hello all,

I have got a 30 gallon freshwater tank. In the tank i have got 22 various tetras 2 honey gouramis 1 blue gourami 1 pink gourami 1 pleco (quite big) 1 siamese fighting. What is the best filter i should get. Im new to this and i have not got a clue. At the moment there is undergravel filter but this is old and blocked i thihnk. All suggestions will be appreciated!

Cheers.

In a tank of that size, an exturnal filter would be the best option IMO, as you have a high bio-load in your tank. I would look at the tetra-tec range, or the Eheim range. The Eheims are more expencive, but should last longer that almost any other make of exturnal.

Go for a cannister filter. You simply can't get any better than that, better still, your water will be crystal clear. Maybe look around the fluval range (205/305?); or the tetratec (many people are wuite happy with their quality); or if money isn't an issue, go for eheim. They are the best of all filters, and you are assured quality... Look around the ecco range or classic...

Thanks for that. one more thing. would i have to cycle the new filter in a fishless tank or could i stick it straight in my tank with the fish in?

it depends...

If you have a matured tank already, take some of that media and put it in the new filter... leave it there for about 3 or more weeks, and you should be fine. But run he other filter along with it aswell so you don't end up loosing a whole heap of good bacteria
