I have two tanks at home right now.

A 5 gallon planted tiger barb tank. And a 10 gallon planted community tank. Both have been running for a couple of months now and are doing well. Its just resently that i have really started getting interested in marine tanks. I now own a 30 gallon tank that i bought off a friend that came with a heater and aquarium top. It will probably stay empty until im ready to set up a saltwater tank which wont be till at least the spring.
My question is about filtration. I wanted to use about 20 to 30 lbs of live rock and some other forum, but im just not quite sure what to do. like is a protein skimmer compleatly necessary in a tank of this size and what should i invest in if i ever do want to venture into keeping corals which i will most likey want too.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
thanks

First off, :hi: to the salt side of things. 30 gallons is on the dividing liine between using a skimmer and not using one. I would reccomend against a skimmer on a tank that small. I would however reccomend a sump. This will get very very complicated to setup if you've never thought of one, but the value in longterm tank stability and filtration is worth it IMO. you could have a sump with refugium and some filter socks or women's nylons to add stratecically for chemical filtration when necessary. For more than you'll ever want to know about sumps, check out melevsreef.com
