This is sort of an opinionated survey

Hob filter
Vs
Internal filter
Vs
Sponge filter
Vs
External filter <~~ not my favourite choice

It would be a 60 litre tank that I have been given that I am refurbishing so I don't know about the stocking yet

Cool

I looked at hob filters but hear they aren't the best so it would be well worth sacrificing a corner for an internal filter

Royston please go on I have heated of sumps but I'm not sure what they would do for my small 60 litre tank or where to get them

They all have their uses depending on what you want them for, I own all of them! sponge filters are great for smaller tanks that need gentle safe flow such as fry tanks, larger tanks with alot of inhabitants will benefit from an external where as internals are great for anything in between, a hob is good to increase oxygenation and are easier to maintain so they all have their pros and cons

I previously had a sponge filter now have a hob for my 60l. i was using the tank for breeding hence sponge but im converting it to a dwarf puffer tank and the hob was suggested on the dp website - it really depends on what your intentions are for the tank imo

Ahh for a 60l an internal or an external ( slight overkill ) would be fine, I have an external on my 60l it increases the tanks capacity which is good so is better but they are expensive, luckily I got mine free with the pfk subscription last year

Lucky :)

What type of internal is cheap and very good at the same time

Aquaclear hob filters are perfect for any tank up to 55 gallons imo. They are easy, will last forever and have plenty of room for the proper media to harness bacteria.
