Hi, I'm still relatively new to fish keeping but have acquired an Aqua One Equience cube tank that I believe holds 160 or 165 litres. I'm upgrading from my current biggest tank which is around 70 litres. I have only used internal filters before but as this is a larger quantity I'm thinking I may have to buy an external one for this. To be honest I would prefer to have an internal one if it would be good enough as I do lack space for one outside. I would appreciate some advice please on a suitable filter.
Many thanks.

make a powerhead filter for that tank.. Use a ceramic media inside a water bottle.. Do a youtube search for dyi powerhead aquarium filters and you can make one for aboot 25 dollars, less if you already has the materials onhand..

Fluval make some decent filters, both internal and external. They're good in terms of price aswell. :good:

for a tank of 160 ish litres a fluval u4 would suit you to the ground, making a DIY filter may work and it's cheap, but it might not work quite as well as something designed to work in the first plave, the U4 has pretty much what that tank will need meeting - 1000L/H of flow, two sponges for wastes, carbon to get rid of tannins/other traces in your tap water, fine pad for getting rid of the other stuff and a nice load of ceramic media in the middle, it's a pretty #41#### good filter, alternatively for the external route you might be able to put a API nexx or two? these are like a hybrid between internal and external, the pump being inside the tank and the filtration outside, if one set of canisters isnt enough you can bolt another onto it

thats the nexx, ignore the bit about throwing the media away, i'm pretty sure you can wrap that in a sponge instead, or put sponge inside of it, also ignore the bit about throwing the stars away, that's purely revenue generation

I have the fluval U4 and it is a good filter, easy to clean too, but I have a 130 litre tank that has got a fluval U4(1000l/h) and a hood filter that is rated 800L/H, total 1800L/H between the two. I know it seems high, but for a 160 litre tank I would at least do 1600L/H filter or 2 filters combo(considering that the manufacturers advertise the water flow without media, etc...so in reality this is a lot less too) If you like to be on the safe side depending on what type of fish and how heavily stocked the tank will be, get an external maybe. Does your tank come with a cabinet to put an external filter in?
