Ok so recently I was not very popular at home. The whole "why is there now a fish tank where the christmas tree needs to go" didn't go down very well with the parents .

So it had to be moved

Anyway what I realised was that I had the capability to remove all the water and have very little effect on the fish. What I also realised was my under gravel filter was cracked and had a lot of gravel under it. Now it still seems to be functioning properly but to be honest I have been fed up with it almost since I fitted it. The dirty gravel, the " silent" air pump and the cleaning of the tube thing make the whole thing seem pretty pointless. So i need some help choosing a filter with the price bracket of a about £30 - £40. I have been looking at a lot of different types and have ended up pretty confused. I have go a fluval external on my other tank as well as a internal 4+. I know that the external has led to a lot of spilt water as the primer is useless but Since the tank is over filtered I have no experiance of how well the both function.

A few thigs I would like to know. Is there anything wrong with the the Magi-jet filters you can pick up for £15 and how do they compare to the well known brands like the fluvals?

Also looked at the externals that attatch to the side of your tank but they look a bit unreliable. Anyone know how they work? Surely if the attatch on to the tank they can't work like the ones that sit on the floor?

So any suggestions?, what would you do? and anyone know any bargin sites apart from ebay?

its got an air filter built in and will do up to a 100 litres.

New Id forgtten something the tank is 120l and I would prefer if it was slighty better filtered as it is a tall tank. Do they do it in a bigger size?

They do but not his cheap, there about £30, i eould get 2 of these if i was you, maybe put one a t either end of the tank

I recently changed from my fluval4+ to a tetra-tec IN1000. This costs £40 an they sell them in most good shops I have been to. It says up to 200ltre so it will be slightly over and provides very good aeration (is that a word).

Forgot to say, I prefer this much more than the fluval.

If you want to spend a little extra and go for a external i would highly reccomend Eheim.

Much more reliable then Fluvals and made to a much higher standard. You can pick up a 2213 for around £45.

My tank is the same as yours and I have a Fluval3Plus. That is the right filter for the tank size as far as I know. Works for me anyway.

If anything its too powerful because even on least setting it agitates the water a lot and I'm trying to grow plants with CO2. Getting a spray bar from P@H for £6 to fit it today so this shouldn't be a problem any more.

hi i have just got a Eheim Aquaball 2212 Internal Aquarium filter

i must say im very impressed with it so far

ebay is quite cheap i got mine for £22

they do smaller ones for less money

Run the two in parallel for at least 6 weeks before removing the UGF!

When i changed over, i ran two concurently for about 2 weekds and it was fine
