Why is it so hard to find an eheim filter online?! Every site I look at has them labeled as different model numbers, and then I can't find them on amazon/eBay.

Eheims come in a whole bunch of different model numbers. '
Try searching for Eheim in your google search bar, and hopefully it'll direct you to a site where you can purchase them from

out of interest, have you looked at other brands or have you just set your heart on eheim?

Well, I initially was just trying to find a specific eheim online to price compare. This quickly turned into a mess of different filters and model numbers. I'm open to other brands, I just want it to last and I like the idea of it heating the water, unless I can't afford it lol.

you cn get inline heaters and filters with inbuilt heaters, but I tend to think of it as a "what more can go wrong" list. I use seperate parts for heating and filtration (3 different filters actually and backups for each of them)

how big is the tank, what flow rate do you want and what heater power are you after?

Tank will most likely be a 55g, unless I stumble across a good deal on one slightly bigger. Whatever heat and flow is appropriate, plan on planting it with a pretty good amount of plants, so decent flow as well.
I'd be fine with separate heat, that was my plan all along until I saw the ones that had it in the filter. Just thought that was cool.

Is there a specific Eheim filter (model) you are looking for?  They do a lot of business in the UK and the models vary slightly in the US.

As Blubble37 mentioned, built-in / in-line heating can be a case of 'something else to go wrong', even though I am sure many people use and are satisfied with this type of setup.  Personally, I run dual submersible heaters, one set slightly below the other as a fail-safe.  In the end, it does really depend on what you want.

Have you also looked at Marineland and Fluval canisters?  I know I may get some criticism for mentioning Marineland, but overall I have been highly satisfied with their products and currently run dual C-360's (run about $120/each) on my 60gal to achieve a 12x turnover in filtration due to my cichlid stock.

Since you mentioned planting, you will need to look at a lower flow rate since most plants cannot tolerate higher flow streams, but you also need to consider the distribution of CO2.  While I am no expert in densely planted tanks (yet

) , I would be inclined to look at 3-4x turnover with a small wave-maker or power-head and spray bar.

Eheim certainly has the track record as the most dependable and reliable filter available.  We may all have our filter preferences, but Eheim has been around several decades now and their filters have stood the test of time in this regard.

To the heating unit in the filter.  In 1997 I bought a new 70g tank, and I decided to get the Eheim Pro II canister with the heating element in the bottom of the canister.  This filter/heater has been in operation ever since, continuously, and I have never had an issue.  I have had it on my 90g for the past six years, and the temperature in the tank never varies by more than 0.3 degrees from the set temperature--that is less than half of one degree.  I have two regular heaters in my two other large tanks, and they are not this accurate.

The heating element in an Eheim canister is no less likely to fail that any submersible heater, and perhaps far less likely.  The filter was higher priced obviously, but at the same time I didn't have to spend money for two "regular" heaters which would likely have been comparable if not more than the additional cost.  And having the heating unit in the filter means that all the water circulating is heated, something you cannot guarantee with regular heaters.  And you don't have two more pieces of equipment in the tank.  For a 4-foot 55g, you want two heaters, one at either end next to the filter intake and return respectively.

I have not tried the inline heating units that apparently can be added to any canister.

Byron.

I have used two Hydor inline heaters now for over a decade. One is on the return side of an Eheim canister which is the recommended location. However, when I installed the second one my next Eheim canister, the layout forced me to put it on the intake side. I was a bit worried about this but some 11 years later and it is all working fine.

I just through out about 10 failed heaters of assorted brands. I have a bo with another 10 or so that are now questionable- I figure 2 maybe 3 are still good. I have 19 running and used to have about 25or so at my peak. Over the past 14+ years I have pretty much had every brand fail except for those two inlines. However, I have had the normal in tank heaters from Hydor fail.

jag- if you can give us a bit of information about the size and type of tank you want the Eheim for, I am sure both Vyron and i can offer you model suggestions  and I can tell you where in the states to find them for a good price.

There is an old staying in the the real estate business. There are three important considerations when buying real estate: location, location and location. When it comes to buying a canister there are three brands I recommend: There is Eheim, then there is Eheim or you can go with Eheim.

Honestly, I'm thinking a 55g, but depending on cost I could go as high as 75g. I'd love to have in filter heat, maybe I'll spend the extra.

in all honesty, getting a slim, inline heater will be more reliable and less of a nightmare if things go wrong. Eheim is a good brand. I don't have much experience with it, I'm a TT-EX kinda person and a U-Series.
