I have inherited an established 110l tropical tank (about 14 years). It has an undergravel filter which is long past its best.

So yesterday i bought a new internal filter (Fluval 3 plus). Its all set up and running in the tank now. Ive never seen the water so clear! I was wondering how long will i have to wait until i can removwe the undergravel filter.

Also there is a hugh amount of gravel at the bottom of the tank. Would it damage the fish If i removed say half of the depth. Would i be removing the usefull bacteria?

All help is gratefully recieved! I aint gotta clue!

I would say leave the new filter in the tank for at least 3-4 weeks to ensure that it is fully colonised with de-nitrifying bacteria, before removing the existing UGF.

Then remove the gravel a little at a time, just in case it affects your biological filtration. Better safe than sorry. :good:
