Can I pass you a pinch of salt for that? It's probably that he didn't clean it properly before use.

All Media needs a thorough washing & rinsing before use and then dipping in old tank water before finally being installed in your filter, probably just coincidence too that this guy lost his shrimp, I use the contents of a Asda Smart price pillows 2 for £4.50 100% polyester wool will last you about 4 years if not longer (no fish or Shrimp loss or illness since I was tipped off about using it )

I would not trust that. My friend who imports and sells shrimp often puts filter wool, or something similar, into shipping bags with shrimp. You need to give the shrimp something they can hold onto as they can not do so on the bag. If you don't it is supposed to drive them nuts.

Note- she uses the more rigid form of filter floss rather than the more cottony looking stuff.

I doubt it was the wool unless the person got a kind which has mild inhibitors or fire retardants in it- these should never go into a tank.

And something which is sold as filter wool would not have those things in it.
