Hi All.
I am upgrading from a 60 litre to a 180 litre this week and I want to do a
cycle with my old filter running along side the new one.
Now what I need to know is while I am doing the change over I am going
to leave a third of the water in the old tank and leave the filter lying on
the gravel, now does the filter need to be kept running to preserve the bateria
or can I just leave it submerged for a couple of hours.

regards tony.

Ideally the less time the filter is not running the better, but the filter media should be ok stored in a bucket of tank water for maybe an hour or so. As for running it along side your new filter, I wouldn't bother. And by that I mean, take the sponge out of the old and put it into the new filter alongside the new filter media. This way the bacteria will transfer and grow in the new filter much quicker.

Be careful of your stocking. If you're transfering fish from the 60l tank, don't add any new fish for a while. It will give the new filter a chance to build up more bacteria (larger surface area of media I assume, seeing as its a bigger tank and likely a bigger filter). Then about 2 or 3 weeks after, start adding new fish slowly over several weeks :)

HiDev,
Thanks for the quick reply and advice mate I will do
as you suggest and just put the sponges in with the
new ones.

kind regards Tony.
