Hi Guys,

Just a quick question really. I have a Fluval 2+ internal filter, how often should I change the sponges?

Cheers :D

Steph

The white one - whenever the flow gets reduced, you can either rinse it in some water taken from the tank or replace it. - roughly once a fortnight.

The charcoal one (if you use it) - about once a month.

The others - never! That's where the nice bacteria lives!

I use the Fluval Filters too, On the boxes it says to remove the carbon filter after 1 week and the polyester after 1-2weeks "at the latest" :S

that's insane

I have the 2+, I rinse mine out in tankwater every month, I don't think I've replaced them yet. I don't use carbon.

I've never replaced my fluval sponges (I use only the basic white ones + the poly 'fine particles' one - no carbon). Rinsed every couple of months in tank water when the clogging indicators falls all the way down...been running nearly 6 months now...The replacement instructions with those filters are a joke :p

aj xx

Replace them when they fall to pieces. Of course the manufacterer wants you to replace them every two weeks, you have to buy their product to fit inside the filter they made  Just a quick rinse in tankwater every two to 3 weeks is enough to keep them running smoothly.

Hi Guys,

thats great thanks for the replies. I have had the tank going for just 2 years now and have not replaced the sponges and as many of you said just rince them in tank water every 3-4 weeks. So thanks, you have put my mind at ease :D

Cheers

Steph

yeh I have a fluval 2 aswell, if you changed the filter every two weeks you would never build up the proper bacteria you need in your tank.
