Hi all, i bet this question has been asked many times, so here goes, can you reuse after rinsing the black and the blue sponges that are used in a Juwel 800 tank.

Cheers

Ray

I do and yeh i pretty sure that you can. but if you rinse them too much the bacteria will be cleaned of and you may have to recycle. You could just buy another set. They're cheap.

Just rinse off in aquarium water - NEVER REPLACE THEM ONCE THEY ARE CYCLED!!!

But my lfs and many others says to replace every 4 months.
they say that to make money out of you! ;)

The black sponge is the carbon sponge - you don't need to use that at all. The blue sponge can be used forever. If they fall apart, then replace them (one at a time), but I can't imagine that they would ever fall apart - I had my Juwel internal filter for 6 years before I ripped it out, and the sponge were still completely fine. And I still have them in the garage as spare media ;)

same here i've always used the same sponges i'm just glad i didnt listen to me lfs

The black one is carbon and usually only ever needs to be used for removing meds from the tank. It stops being effective after a few weeks anyway so it's just another sponge now. So you could replace it for ordinary blue sponge if you want to at this stage.

But your blue sponges don't need replacing unless they're falling apart. Give them a light rinse in tank water every 6 weeks ago if you like but you definitely 100% do not need to replace them as often as manufacturers suggest. If you do ever want to replace them, never replace more than one every six weeks or so.

In other words, the less you mess with your filter sponges, the more effective your filter will be.
