Hi people just wondering, when I come to the stage of needing new sponge how do I go about putting it in? Surely it would be like doing a fish in cycle as can't be taking all the fish out again?

There is no need to replace sponges unless they fall apart, as above stagger the time in which you replace individual sponges.

Well yeah thats the thing, I think mine is starting to fall apart. Keeps every now and again throwing out loads of stuff, looks like loads of bubbles but I don't think it is.

Another way to do it is to replace the sponge whole, then try and squeeze the old sponge out near the intake part on the filter so it sucks in all the goodness. But its a bit messy.

Hmmm ok thanks for this, I'm going to try and do half and half and hope its ok.

It will be fine mate. This will allow the new part to grow bacteria quickly then replace the other half a month or two later.

When doing your water change, put the old and the new sponge filter bit in the old tank water and squeeze both for a while, water should go nice and brown! hehe! Then just add the new one. I sometime cut a small piece of the old off and try wedge inbetween the new for a couple of days to help it along. Works for me.
