Filter Reving?

What does this mean when the filter keeps making a loud sound then it is meant to and it sounds like reving?

My guess would be that the impeller (rotating blade that draws water through filter) is battling against a buildup of "gunk."

Yesterday afternoon, having installed my new Eheim 2078 external filter in the Rio240 tank, I decided to swap over the Juwel 1000l/hr pump from the Rio and put it in my Korrall60 QT (which comes with a measly 280l/hr pump and Compact filter, actually limitting the stock for the tank by 25%-ish) for my 6 Denisons Barb and 3 Panda Garra. All was well until 2100, infact the fish were loving the stream current in there from the pump and the Koralis 1 powerhead, until I did a ~66% water change...

Apparently the Compact filter unit lost sucker power and fell ~3" to the bottom on the tank while I was pouring old water away down the loo. When I turned on the tank's electrics after re-filling with 'Aqua-plus'ed water, the 1000 pump was dead as a dodo. I quickly then rescued the original 280 pump which had been put in the Rio240, so that the QT had some filtration. Swapping the 1000's fuse to known working one did nothing, so I presumed that the pump had died, so made a mental note to goto the LFS this mrning for a replacement...

But then out of curiousity, I took the 1000 pump into the kitchen and removed it from the casing that makes an airtight seal with the filtration unit. When I plugged the pump into the mains, it vibrated but there was no impeller movement. I then gave the impeller a quick giggle and it came back to life!

Should i give it a clean in tank water?

Doesnt need to be tank water, just take it out and clean it in the sink. Just never wash your filter media in tap water. Although some people do anyway...

Have you tried removing the impeller completely from the spindle and cleaning both impeller and spindle individually, it that's possible on your pump?

Im not sure how that is dome, But it has just got more quieter i think it is getting there by itself.
