Hi all,
I haven't posted in a while as I have been too busy enjoying my new watery friends who seem to be having a great time in my tank!
I just have a quick question which I was hoping someone would be able to give me their opinion with.
I have the Fluval U3 internal filter. This filter has a nozzle on it which, if you position it so it is just above the water line, brings oxygen in to the tank with a stream of bubbles through the normal filter outflow. Now I haven't been having this on, mostly because it is quite noisy when it is on and I like a silent tank (I have no standalone air pump). My question was, I was thinking that I could put the nozzle in, say once a week, after I did my water change and leave it in for the day to put some oxygen in to the water. Is this worthwhile, or should I just leave it out/in? I have 5 real plants and a couple of moss balls.

Oops I forgot to say...I normally have the filter so the outflow ripples the water surface (but does not make bubbles)...is this enough to give me the oxygen I will need on a daily basis?

That is a "venturi" device & they can be quite noisy, but no more so than a stand alone air pump.

Air bubbles in your tank are realy a matter of personal asthetic choice as they do not actualy oxygenate the water as they rise to the surface.
The agitataion to the surface layer as they pop is what provides the oxygen.

If you angle the outflow of your filter from under the water so it disturbs the surface then that will provide more than enough oxgenation for the tank.

Thanks for the help, glad I do not have to leave that device on as not only is it noisy I also don't like the look of the bubbles :)

I have a few tanks with that kind of pump in them. Because I hate a noisy tank I simply leave the pump well below the water surface with no hose attached to bring in any air. The fish don't know any better and I get a nice quiet tank.
