I got my first tank with a filter today. My betta has ich though and we are treating him with medicine. I wanted to know if the filter will filter out the medicine? Also, with a filter how often do you have to do a full water change??

A filter does not reduce the number or magnitude of water changes. It just decreases the number of suspended, large particles. You'd still have to do water changes every week or every 2 weeks.

Your filter will only remove chemicals if you are using chemical filtration? What are you using in the filter? If it's carbon, then you'll have to remove it in order to treat your tank.

Yeah the starter filter kit came with the carbon filter. Is a carbon filter bad...should I get a different one??

Carbon filters are good but not when treating fish with medicine because carbon "sponges" up medication. you shouldn't use carbon when medicating.
