My question is with the filter it is supplied with an air hose to attach to the top of the unit i think this adds more oxygen to the water, do i need to keep this on or isit un neccesary?

Oxygen is created in the water by surface aggitation, so if you direct the hose outlet along the surface of the water then it will oxygenate the water :)

i have got the normal house outlet but also another small air hose that can sit out of the water completely to add more air apparently says the instructions, do i need to keep this on or is the sigle hose outlet enough

Hi Joe, welcome to the forum. As Jonny has said, you do not really need the extra pipe going into the top of the filter, which is creating more bubbles in the water flow, if, your filters outlet is creating a wave hitting the surface of the water.

Oxygen is created by surface aggitiation, so as long as the surface is being broke by the flow from the filter, you will be ok

thanks guys i thought it might have been unecessary but didnt want to take it off without asking for advice. my tank is currently cycling only since last night, should i plant plants in it soon say tomorow or after the cycle has finished?

With that type of filter you do need the air line

Why? Because the outlet of the filter is below the impeller and the impeller needs to be submerged to work.

Smeg,

as long as the surface is being disrupted, you dont need an airline, an airline doesnt create oxygen

im not sure guys, in the instructions says its additional if you want to.

Welcome JoeF. It is an optional use. If you think you want bubbles in the water coming from the filter, it won't hurt to connect an air line to the filter. If you don't want the bubbles, the tank will be fine without them. It is really your choice. Personally, I don't like the bubbles in the water flow so I never connect the air line to the filter outlet. It is completely up to you.
