how often should i clean the filter in my tank ?

what type of filter do you have?
how long has it been set up?
only squeeze out the sponge into the syphoned tank water you already romove best to do this with a bucket u by especially for the tank and wrinse it in the bucket

its a round blue sponge aqua medic pump its been in the tank a few weeks i had to clean it because the water had stopped flowing out of it it was that blocked

why only squeeze the sponge in syphoned tank water ?

The filter only needs a "clean" when the flowrate drops to an unacceptable level. Experience will tell you when, but you might like to start at 50%

You MUST ALWAYS clean any filter media in old tank water, as doing it "under the tap" will kill all the "good" bacteria you have been building up during the "cycle" - its the chlorine that they add to tap water specifically to kill bacteria that does it, INSTANTLY...

So best thing is to combine it with a water change, syphon out some water - clean the media whilst youre at it !

i honestly haven't cleaned my filter out in my oldest tank which is a ten gal for like 2 years.

well im sure its only been in a few weeks a month max and the flow rate had stopped completley it was well blocked up but its been clean and is now back to normal
