I'm about to restart my fishless cycle using dr tim's one and only nitrifying bacteria and ammonia (plus adding flourish but that's a whole other thread). The bottle of one and only says to turn off the skimmer and remove the filter sock. I don't think I have a filter sock but what is a skimmer? I have a fluval spec v which has a built in filter that is a large sponge with two big cavities in it which hold biological (ceramic) media and carbon. The water supposedly goes through the sponge, up a tube, and back into the tank.  Is that a skimmer?

In case anyone is wondering what I'll put in such a small tank-it will hold a single betta and a nerite snail or two. Plus a few fake and real plants.

A skimmer is a device used in marine fish tanks for removing proteins and stuff off the surface of water, i think.
Also a filter sock is commonly used in marine set ups as well.

Am wondering if you have ordered a Saltwater version of Dr Tims instead of one for Freshwater aquaria?

I believe the SW has a picture of either a Clown Fish or a Blue Tang and the FW one has a picture of a Bolivian Ram that may help identify which is which.

Now i have no idea if using either will work for either SW or FW am afraid.....

I got the freshwater version-it says so on the top of the label. I guess I don't need to worry about the sock or skimmer. I wonder if maybe the wording on the label is the same for all bottles.

Thats a relief actually, I thought for a moment you got he wrong bottle :X

Quite possibly it may have the same wording on both types of bottles, I have never thought to look at both and compare the two.

But yes, I'd ignore the skimmer and filter sock parts ;)
