I know most of you are not very familiar with Aqueon filters. Their system uses a bio-holster that holds the carbon cartridge. They tell you to replace the cartridge once a month. The standard procedure is to rinse the cartridge under tap water to rid the unit of dust, The proper way to clean the bio-holster is to shake off in used tank water because it holds the beneficial bacteria. Then you put the new cartridge into the holster. Question......will the newely rinsed cartridge affect the bio-holster because it was just rinsed with tap water? I can only assume Aqueon has thought about this and it is OK. Because everyone knows what happens when you ASSUME...........

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

It will not effect it much.

Carbon is not needed unless you are removing meds from the water.

I was planning to replace the cartridge soon because the water is starting to flow around the filter. It's pretty used up. I'm gonna cut the carbon out of the new one and put it in because I still need the mechanical filter. I would try not using it at all but I'm sure what else to use because of Aqueon's setup. Any possible ideas? I do have another filter in the same tank that I'm using to seed another tank. I have the biomax insert from a Aqua Clear 70 in that one. Could I remove the cartridge from the Aqueon and stuff in a sponge fron the same Aqua Clear? I'm planning on using 2 AC 70 on my 55gal.

Thanks.
