I've had a good few filters over the last couple of years and have spent a few quid getting new filter wool , foam and bio ring etc when I'm setting up a new tank . Just wondering is it possible just to buy sheets of filter foam and wool that I can just chop up myself and is there an aquarium safe type that I should be using. Also is it possible to create some sort of media that would replicate what bio rings do.
I had bought a sheet of floss wool stuff from the local lfs this time last year and managed to keep me going all year. What exactly is this material.

sometimes referred to as polywool or filter floss try amazon found this on a quick search

And foam:- http://www.amazon.co.uk/FILTER-GRADE-MEDIA-COARSE-MEDIUM/dp/B00779P63S/ref=sr_1_46?s=outdoors&ie=UTF8&qid=1388097689&sr=1-46&keywords=NEW+DAWN

For Bio Media If you need to keep costs as low as possible stuff like lava rock is used quite widely as filter bio media and is very cheap again found on Amazon:- http://www.amazon.co.uk/Landmann-0273-Lava-Rock-Pack/dp/B0002DF1TK/ref=sr_1_1?s=outdoors&ie=UTF8&qid=1388098179&sr=1-1&keywords=lava+rock
